Sixteen Sunday Saints

O. K. friends, here are Sixteen Saints who I'd love to spend time with on a quiet Sunday afternoon. I've listed eight (8) women and eight (8) men who I would love to get to know better. Many are dead now but these would be my SIXTEEN SUNDAY SAINTS.

WOMEN:

  1. AMY CARMICHAEL
  2. ELISABETH ELLIOT
  3. SUSANNA WESLEY
  4. RUTH BELL GRAHAM
  5. FANNY CROSBY
  6. ELIZABETH SKOGLUND
  7. FRANCES RIDLEY HAVERGAL
  8. EVANGELINE FISHER (my grandmother)
MEN:
  1. JIM ELLIOT
  2. GEORGE MULLER
  3. CHARLES HADDON SPURGEON
  4. D. L. MOODY
  5. ROBERT CLEAVER CHAPMAN
  6. BILLY GRAHAM
  7. ANDREW BONAR
  8. ROBERT MURRAY M'CHEYNE
  9. J. HUDSON TAYLOR

Oops, that makes seventeen. I neglected to add my hero, Hudson Taylor and I couldn't remove a name from the list so we have SEVENTEEN SUNDAY SAINTS.

Of course I could add 50 more but this would be my list as of now. What about yours?

I'd be curious to read your list of Sixteen (or Seventeen) Sunday Saints. Go ahead! Make your list! God bless!

  1. U got me smiling ! Most of those names I am familiar with -- good post -- The zeal and committment to Christ , such as Amy Carmichael, the other Judson that went to India -- the list is so long -- Saints that were SO COMMITTED TO CHRIST and HIS KINGDOM is what separated these from many - and imagine the "ONES" we have NEVER EVEN HEARD ABOUT -

  3. David, As U said, so many names that we have read their writings or heard stories but I would like to meet some of the ones that were behind the scenes -- Such as Henry Craik the man that started with George Mueller but was so humble as to prefer Mueller to have his name in the limelight --
If I could, I would spend an afternoon with the humblest of Christians , once in a resturant as we were travelling across from the east coast to Indiana. Two white haired elderly women, prayed over their meal, quietly, no noise at all and their heads were bowed for a spell. I was so impressed by the Godly atmosphere that emmanated from them, I went over and invited myself to sit down with them, they smiled and I commented on their long grace before the meal. She smiled and U could "feel" the Spirit of God on her life. I KNOW THIS IS NOT EXACTLY WHAT U WERE LOOKING FOR :-) Moses was called the humblest man on the planet, Enoch walked with God and Elijah went up in a chariot of God. So for now , Those 3 men head the list . Susanna Wesley raised her children in such Godly Light, she would be one of the women for sure , Those two women at the resturant for sure. lol- see what U did ? got me rambling ---

  4. Oh, I like your list too. I love Elisabeth Elliot, and believe some other women are songwriters. :-) I love Charles Spurgeon's devotionals, and think the men on your list are great men of God.

  5. I would just copy your list and then add a few more (well, many more) such as Tozer, Bonhoffer, Watchman Nee, Francais Schaffer and his wife, and a few current ones would be Pastor Lutzer, David Jeremiah, Andy Stanley (son of Charles Stanley). The sad thing about making lists is it is too easy to leave an important person off. :( I think my list would actually never be complete. ;) New names would just keep popping up in my mind!

I agree with passing-thru...I would love to hear more about your grandmother. (Quick side note: I love love love the name Evangeline- I've always said that if I ever have kids and have a girl, Evangeline is on my short list of names!!).

Hope you, Carol and the kids have a great week :)
