Smashing Idols

When I think of smashing idols, my mind goes back to an old black and white movie about Martin Luther's life. He struggled with many of the teachings of the Roman Catholic church and, at one point in the movie, is seen destroying some graven images.

Many years later an eccentric, troubled English poet and hymnwriter, William Cowper, penned these words:

"The dearest idol I have known,
What e'er that idol be,
Help me to tear it from Thy throne
And worship only Thee."

Cowper was in and out of insane asylums during his life but had a deep faith and a strong friendship with John Newton.

Our idols may not be graven images. They could be cars, boats, a motorcycle, a relationship, a hobby, anything that comes between us and a holy God.

What idol am I bowing down before? What about you? Get rid of it and worship only Him!
