Transparency & Honesty in our Battles

The pilgrim hasn't been scribbling much lately.  He has spent much of his waking hours ruminating though.  That can be dangerous.  It's certainly scary for me.

If I could add my thoughts to this blog like you portray a photo or an image, it might frighten even the best of you.

So I won't alarm you. I will just say that the fight with mental illness, and depression in particular, is so gut-wrenching and insidious that it would be very easy to throw my hands up in defeat.  But I won't.  Are you engaged in a battle for your very soul?  Take heart!

The sovereign God knows all about our struggles.  We don't have a clue.  He does.  Journey on, friends.  The battle is God's not ours.

  1. I was looking at other blogs and saw a link to yours thankfully. There is something that is comforting in knowing that you are not out there alone. It encouraged me to know that there is someone out there who is willing to be transparent about their struggles with mental illness. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your heart with us in the midst of a most difficult time for you.

  2. You sound like Habakkuk. That's pretty much what he learned. God knows best! Praying for you!

  3. The only thing on this post that bothered me -- which will change with this comment -- was the line at the bottom that said 0 comments from fellow pilgrims.

It's April 30th as I write this, and your post went up on April 25th. I know you have a lot of readers, and I think the problem is that many of us aren't sure how to respond.

Depression is a tough nut to crack. But like the Psalmists often do, you end with a note of triumph: "Journey on, friends. The battle is God's not ours."

As dark as what you're going through seems, you end with a note of encouragement for your readers. That's awesome!

David, I know you've got people surrounding you with prayer who've known you a lot longer and a lot better than I; people who really, really love you.

We'll keep praying, keep loving, and keep believing the clouds are going to lift.

Even if we don't leave comments!

  4. Hello
Im Jane I was diagonosed with bipolar depression about 15 years ago. In 2001 I made I recieved salvation. I knew Depression was gone and would no longer rule my life. Now I am not saying that depression doesnt try to come in but what I am saying is I recognize it and I dont play with it anymore. Maybe this doesnt make sense to you. But here's the thing Depression is a mind thing so let this mind thats in Christ be also in me. I know I am healed of depression it has no right to me. Or you. Its a matter of faith what do you believe. We are not conformed to this world but we are transformed by the renewing of our MINDs.
It is very important to surround yourself with positive things and people and sometimes you have to walk away from naysayers. Example my mom everytime I may get little sad she says its depression. The truth of the matter sadness is part of life things happen that make us sad.
Your final statement is right on it's not your battle it's the Lords. So when you get up every morning and think of all the things you have to be thankful for. Depression has to flee when you fill your spirit with uplifting songs movies books people and continue to pray and believe.
Having faith God is a respector of faith not people. Then depression dies.It cant live in all that goodness...
last week my pastor said You can trust God to save your soul why can't you trust Him with your life.. We make things complicated and they are really simple.... So I stand in agreement with you that depression has to leave you in Jesus name. Gods Word says we have power over these things.... Continue the good fight of Faith and walk in Liberty as you are meant to. I thank Jesus right now for your Victory.

  5. You keep fighting the good fight David. Persevere and by God's grace and the power of His might...He will bring you through David. In doing so, because of your willingness to be transparent...others may also be helped and encouraged in their battles.

    Blessings in Christ dear brother.

    Susan
